Top 10 Fall 2009 Must Haves

Wardrobe staples are just that – staples. It means, regardless of the trends, they should be a part of your wardrobe. But any fashionista knows you just got to have the season’s must-haves.

Now that fall 2009 Fashion Week is over, and fall trends have been named, Style.com lists down your must-have items for fall.

fall must-have

Something faux

Be it faux leather, faux fur or faux reptile, something faux is a must-have for fall. Style.com names the crocodile-effect leggings at Rouland Mouret and fur-print silks at Hermès as some of the notables. But Stella McCartney tops their fave list with her "animal-free cupro jacket."

fall must-have

Something sexy

Well, this must-have is a given. You always have to have something sexy no matter what season. For something sexy this fall, go for mini dresses or short skirts, preferably littered with sequins or made of leather. Check out William Rast’s collection for some nice and short denim and leather pieces. Also check out Herve Lerge for short and shiny dresses or Cynthia Steffe’s fall colleciton if you’re a leather aficionado. Style.com favors YSL’s leather bustier.

fall must-have

Something draped

I think drapes are quickly becoming a mainstay, just like capris. But then again, there is something very classic about drapes, especially on long, flow-y dresses. Check out Versace’s fall collection for romantic, draped dresses. If you’re into draped accessories – you read that right – accessories, Style.com recommends Viktor & Rolf’s draped clutch.

fall must-have

Something surreal

I thought John Galliano’s Russian folklore-inspired fall collection was surreal enough, with its pannier-hipped, full-skirted coats. But Style.com’s pick Comme des Garçons by Rei Kawakubo took the cake. Their pick: Comme des Garçons’ trompe l’oeil jacket.

fall must-have

Something studded

Remember, two of fall’s hottest trends are "sparkle and shine" and "rock redux". Go with something studded this fall and you’ll be hitting two trends with one stone. Look to Style.com’s pick for something studded for inspiration: Alexander Wang’s high-waisted cigarette pants with metal rivet tuxedo stripes. Hot.

We’ve covered the "somethings", and now we’re on to more specific fall must-haves.

fall must-have

Over-knee-boots

They’ve got to be one of the sexiest footwear/apparel pieces ever created. With that, I recommend Yigal Azrouël’s super sexy thigh-high leather boots from his fall collection. If you’re more of the daring type, go for Style.com’s pick, second skin-like leather boots by Nicholas Kirkwood, which grazed Rodarte’s runway for fashion week.

fall must-have

Leather jacket

Leather is definitely a must-have for fall. Aside from "rock redux" another hot trend for fall is "everything leather." Style.com’s recommended must-have: a leather jacket. Not your Harley-riding dad’s leather jacket. Think smaller, form-fitting and sexy. Style.com recommends Phi’s shrunken, short-sleeved leather jacket.

fall must-have

A decorated leg

If it’s not stylish or sexy enough for you to stuff you legs into thigh-high leather boots or go bare-legged altogether, then opt for this go-between fall must-have: tights and hosiery. We’re not talking about tame leg decorations like Christian Lacroix’s lace and flower printed tights. No. Think Doo.Ri’s crystal studded lace stockings and Miuccia Prada’s bejeweled ones at Miu Miu.

fall must-have

Strong-shouldered jacket

Fall collections this year are obsessed with big shoulders. Prominent shoulders are everywhere – on full dresses, mini dresses, and of course jackets. I absolutely love – and therefore recommend – Rick Owens’ high-necked, high-shouldered leather jackets. They look a bit futuristic, yet somehow very "now." On top of that, his jackets are not "for models only" bodies. Style.com’s pick is Christophe Decarnin’s peak-sleeved blazers for Balmain.

fall must-have

Color

After last year’s back to black theme, designers take us to happier and more hopeful territories. So go ahead and wear something colorful, go for neons if you must. I love Michael Kors’ bright green single strapped dress. Style.com recommends Dior’s bright fuchsia Orient-inspired balloon dress by John Galliano.
