2009 Oscars Best and Worst Dressed Celebs

Oscar fever has come and gone, and best people in the film industry have been awarded for their, well, being great at what they do.

Naturally, fans have their own opinions – probably a lot of Mickey Rourke fans went several dollars poorer, while gay rights activists and supporters reached out for their celebratory martinsi. Titanic fans most likely heaved a "finally" sigh. And, Brangelina fans were most likely disappointed, believing that the nominated pair should have won based on their beauty alone – that the elysian couple can act means it was a no contest.

Speaking of beauty, the Academy Awards is just as much about fashion as it is about film. And this year’s red carpet definitely witnessed some clear Oscar fashion winners, and some definite losers.

Forget the awards. After all it’s only mentioned [that they’ve won or had been nominated] when actors have a new movie coming up. [Check out this trailer. Poor Claire Danes, huh?]. Let’s talk about fashion. Style hits and misses are repeatedly aired, reviewed and discussed. Critics never let up. Not even after 10 years later after a fashion success or blunder.

For 81st Academy Awards, let’s see the performers who, 10 years from now, will be lauded for their fashion win.

Best Dressed List
(in no particular order)

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway – Anne Hathaway has arrived. And she exuded that aura (the one that says Disney? Thanks. But I’m Oscar material now) in a white strapless Armani Prive dress covered in a million pailettes and sparklers.

Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz – another "I’ve arrived" moment here. Penelope Cruz was perfect in a dreamy strapless vintage Balmain, swaddled in tons on lace and tulle. To off set her elaborate dress, Penelope wore very simple accessories, and equally simple up do.

Taraji Henson

Taraji Henson – this lady sure knows how to pose. But if you can rock a dress like Taraji Henson, you’ll be posing a lot too. The actress wore a layered, strapless off-white Roberto Cavalli gown that was perfectly accentuated by a huge Fred Leighton necklace.

Marissa Tomei

Marissa Tomei – Marissa Tomei has been around for like, forever. What’s amazing though is that she looks as pretty as ever. At this year’s awards, the best supporting actress nominee looked divine in a pleated (read: a gazillion pleats and folds) white Versace gown.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman – Natalie Portman never disappoints. At this year’s Oscars, the beauty-and-brains actress wore a strapless pink Rodarte gown that complemented her youthful elegance.

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys – wasn’t Alicia Keys stunning at this year’s awards? Dressed in lilac Armani Prive gown, the 12-time Grammy winner – and budding actress – got us thinking "Beyonce who?"

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet – the 6 time nominee finally won a gold statuette – and did it so stylishly in a fetching black and gray Yves Saint Laurent gown. Though many thought that the dress was a bit ho-hum, it was a nice break from the parade of nude colored gowns and nicely channeled old Hollywood glamour.

Worst Dressed List

(in no particular order)

Beyonce

Beyonce – this diva has had her share of fashion hits and misses and has been in the industry for a significant period of time – so how come she still doesn’t know how to dress? Her black gown with gold swathes looked appropriate as an upholstery.

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel – the usually stylish Jessica Biel seemed to have forgotten her fashion sense at this year’s Oscars. Wearing an ivory satin strapless Prada, it looked like she just threw on her sheets and headed out.

Sophia Lauren

Sophia Lauren – the former Oscar winner looked great for a woman her age. But her champagne colored dress was a ruffled mess. Maybe it’s age.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum – and here we thought a super model could never look bad, Heidi Klum’s red deconstructed/architectural Roland Mouret gown looked like a badly made origami.

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke – Mickey Rourke maybe making a comeback, but his dress sense didn’t make it with him. His outfit was a bit innapropriate (for the event and for his age) and sloppy.

On the fence

We were undecided with some stars’ outifts. It’s up in the air for these celebs.

(in no particular order)

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus – the heavily beaded Zuhair Murad dress was appropriate for her age (and her Disney/Tween princess status). We’re just not sure about the petal-like tiers – and worried that the weight of the dress might be too much for the young star.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker – SJP’s dreamy, "barely mint" Dior poufy number was a total attention-grabber . But it was a bit too poufy and too Sex and the City.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie – the strapless black Elie Saab gown was very sexy and very Angelina – which makes it kind of predictable. If it weren’t for those gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz emerald earrings, this look would have been a total snoozer.
