How to Prepare For a Chemical Peel

skin peelingChemical peel, or chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, is a non-surgical technique that improves skin appearance.

A chemical solution is applied to peel of the current facial skin. The result is the peeling of the skin. And once that is removed, the skin will regenerate, revealing a new, smoother one.

This treatment removes wrinkles, tiny scars, minimize age spots and freckles and improves the appearance of damaged skin. Upon treatment application itself, you may experience a a hot or stinging sensation in your face. That is natural since it is the chemical itself. It may last for about five to ten minutes. After the treatment, a cold compress is applied to lessen those sensations. Sometimes, the application of anesthetics, like oral pills, are given, depending on the treatment, so as to lessen or block the pain.

There are six ways of chemical peels, all depending on the kind of solution that is to applied.

  • Alpha hydroxy acid peels
  • Beta hydroxy acid peels
  • Jessner’s peel
  • Retinoic acid peel
  • Trichloroacetic acid peel
  • Phenol peels

Each kind of treatment can be applied depending on what treatment is best for your skin. It is advised that you consult your dermatologist first so you may have an idea about it.

On the day when you undergo such a treatment, the following is advised:

If you smoke, it is advised that you stop. Tobacco chemicals hinder the possibility of healing and may lead to infections.

It is advised that you do not do any off the following three days before the treatment: shaving, waxing, bleaching your hair or apply any hair removal creams.

The process of peeling may take some time. It would be better that you take a time off from work.

Before the application itself, it is advised that you apply products with Retin-A, light glycolic acid or AHA. This will condition the skin and allow better penetration of the solution.

It is best that you go to an appointment with someone else, so in certain circumstances, he or she could provide you with any help if needed.

Mentally prepare yourself prior to the day of appointment.
