Homemade Hair Shine

NYC’s Phyto Universe Salon shares their secret to having great summer hair. The best thing about it is you can do it in the comfort of your own home. Elle.com’s Emily Hebert recounts her experience at Phyto Universe and where she had the salon’s new Summer Bliss Treatment.

  • The treatment starts with a study of the hair and scalp. The stylist rubs an ultra-sound like lens to observe sections of the hair and scalp on a small computer screen.
  • The stylist brushes the hair using a boar bristle brush to massage the scalp. For those planning to go DYI for your treatment, start with this scalp massage.
  • The stylist then mixes egg yolk oil (to restore protein), soybean protein (to restructure), sunflower extract (to protect against UV damage), cashew oil, Shea butter, and pastel oil (to moisturize and nourish) – along with a few choice ingredients for specific hair types – and applies the mixture on the hair, and is left on to steam for 20 minutes. Except for the salon-grade ingredients, most of the ingredients can be bought at your local grocery. If you do not have a steam dome at home, just let it sit for 20 minutes.
  • The standard rinse, shampoo, conditioner and blow-dry finishes the treatment. Hebert attests to having (still) shampoo-ad worthy hair two weeks later.
