Fashion Journalist Katrina Szish talks about Fall’s ’09 hottest trends on CBS News. And it appears that clothes displayed during NY Fall ’09 Fashion Week is all about strong, powerful dressing – with a bit of opulence and the 80s sprinkled here and there.
Prominent shoulders
A seen on the runway shows during New York Fashion week, a lot of designers featured pieces with strong shoulders, so prominent that they’re kind of like a throwback to the 80s, except that they’re more subdued, says Szish. Some designers who featured strong shoulders on their runways include Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Herve Leger. It’s all about "embellishments…strong, powerful dressing," says Szish.
Rock Redux
Rock and Roll is also a dominant look on Fall 09 runways. They call this trend Rocker Redux – and designers we’re all for the rock and roll vibe. Szish shares what Michael Kors said – ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get tougher’ – which is totally what this look/trend is all about. Catwalks were filled with leather, studs and shorts as seen on Philip Lim’s runway show – which, by the way, was so full-on rock and roll, he had Lissy Trullie performing live on the runway. William Rast’s Justin Timberlake line also played up the Rock Redux with acid wash jeans, studs, jackets, and of course big shoulders. Some of the looks were also a little 80s, though, as Szish reports, a bit more subdued.
Sparkle and Shine
A very hot trend for Fall is what Szish calls Sparkle and Shine. Metallics have been popular beginning a couple of seasons back. And last month during New York Fashion Week, they introduced new sparkle and shine colors: copper and gun metal. Sequins too, will be a very hot trend this Fall. Just check out Rodarthe which featured shiny, futuristic pieces; Badgely Mischka who churned out a sequined column gown; and Carolina Herrera who was all about metallics and luxury, complete with accessories which include metallic hairpieces. At Herve Lerge, it was all about the five S’s, as enumerated by Szish – strong shoulders, short, sexy, strong, shiny.
Everything leather
I think that from the Rock Redux look, leather grew a life of its own and became its own trend. And it was apparent at the fashion shows where designers who showcased thigh-high leather boots, leather shorts, leather skirts, leather gloves, and leather dresses. Some of these leather-loving designers include Yigal Azrouel, and Cynthia Steffe who sent a full leather dress down the runway.
