Five New Designers to Watch in 2009

Fashion is constantly changing and evolving. It’s always on the prowl for what’s new, what’s fresh and, of course, what’s chic. This is why organizations are such as GenArt are formed. To provide young, up and coming designers who have something new to bring to the table the means to showcase their masterpiece.

Here are five of this year’s favorites.

Joanne Cordero Reyes

Though this is season is Joanne’s first time at Fashion week under her own label, the young designer is actually not a newbie when it comes to these things. She has designed evening gowns for red-carpet designers such as Reem Acra and J. Mendel. The training she received is reflected in the long, clean lines of her gowns.

But this young designer puts her own spin on otherwise just-plain-pretty clothes. For instance, her pencil skirts get done up in faux-alligator; simple white dresses get rocked out with tulle and shorter hemlines.

Joanne will be showcasing her creations this season at Bumble and Bumble – the place to be for "next big things." (Read" Alexander Wang, Sari Gueron and Bruce).

Jen Kao

Armed with exquisite tailoring and draping skills, Jen is set to conquer the fashion world. She is actually everywhere already. She has regular stints at Nylon and has had her clothes were worn at V photo shoot and was seen in M.I.A. in Paper mag a year ago. Jen’s 2008 presentation was came with photos by no less than Ryan McGinley.

On top of all that, Jen has been named fave fashion Newbie by WWD and Style.com

Miguel Adrover

Before Havaiana’s became a wardrobe staple, Miguel had them featured in his 2003 collection. After that though, Miguel Adrover was a no-show for a few years. He came back as Hess Natur’s creative director. The German label creates organic clothes for men, women and children, which seems to mesh well with a designer like Miguel.

Frank Tell

Apparently in fashion the term "birds of the same feather flock together" applies. At least it does with Spanish designer Frank Tell. Frank is friends with Pamela Love, the jewelry designer, who is friends with Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, who is also friends with Keegan Singh, the super stylist.

But then again, more the stylish friends, Frank is equipped with the skill to validate him in his circle of fashionable friends. His fall designs, while plain, were still quite eye-catching. He created magic with his two-tone palette and geometric shapes. He’s also be praised for creating beautiful silhouettes.

He’s currently a favorite among Elle, WWD, Style.com, and Lucky.

Abigail Lorick

Though it’s true that the model-turned-designer is old news. Anyone who said that has never heard of Abigail Lorick. I am sure you are a Fan of Gossip Girl. What’s the connection you ask? Fans of the show know that Blaire’s mom is a designer. Guess whose real-life designs those are? Yes, you got that right, Abigail’s. One couldn’t ask for a better promo machine, judging by flocks of girls clamoring for her designs. Stay tuned ’til ’09.
