Vera Wang: Fashion Designer

Vera WangVera Wang is an American fashion designer who is well known for her exquisite collection of wedding gowns. Her father owned a chemical factory and because of this, her family was quite wealthy. Vera proceeded to attend The Chapin School as well as the Sorbonne which is in Paris. She finished with an art history degree in Sarah Lawrence College. It was because of her mother that she was able to witness fashion shows in Paris.

Wang’s first love was not the fashion industry. She was trained as a figure skater first and was able to compete in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She was one of the faces that graced the pages of Sports Illustrated in the January 1968 issue. However, when she did not make the U.S. Olympic team, she proceeded to enter the fashion industry.

Vera Wang worked as a senior fashion editor for Vogue magazine for sixteen years. In the year 1985, she left the magazine when they did not give her the position of editor-in-chief which is currently filled by Anna Wintour. She then joined Ralph Lauren as his design director for around two years. In 1990, she eventually opened her own design salon which was located in the Carlyle Hotel in New York city. This was where her bridal gowns gained prominence. It was during those times that her talent was noticed and she began to receive acclaim for her works.

As a designer of bridal and wedding gowns, Vera Wang was able to cater to the most affluent and popular of celebrities in the movie industry. The celebrities, actresses and artists that she had experienced designing for were Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham, Karenna Gore, Sophia Bush, Uma Thurman, Holly Hunter, Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Lopez and Sharon Stone. One of the wedding gowns she designed even appeared on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode where Sarah Michelle Gellar used in that prom-type episode. Consequently, she also designed the wedding dress that Sarah wore on her actual wedding day.

Her wedding dresses weren’t the only things that she marketed. She was able to expand her self-titled brand name to other accessories such as eyewear, jewelry, shoe and houseware collections. She also released a fragrance collection which is a testament of her ingenuity and her artistic passion for the fashion industry. She has now been able to write a book which was entitled "Vera Wang on Weddings" which was released way back in 2001 by the publisher, Harper Collins.
