Makeup Trends: Black Eye Shadow

Makeup Trends Black Eye Shadow

Fall 2009 trends were announced a few months back which means you have plenty of time to stock your closet with the season’s trendiest outfits.

Now that fall is almost upon us, it’s time to discuss the other aspects your over-all fall look – like makeup for instance.

A couple of fall’s hottest trends are leather and rock and roll. What better makeup to go with these trends that dark-rimmed eyes and minimal lip and cheek color.

For his  fall runway show, designer Yigal Azrouël turned to makeup artist Polly Osmond to create the rock ‘n’ roll look that will match his all-about-leather collection.

Polly Osmond says, "The clothes have a lot of leather and heaviness, so Yigal wanted something that was a little rock ‘n’ roll. "I’m trying to move forward from the regular greasy look, so I’ve created a supermatte black eye using four different products, layering them on top of each other."

To create the intense eyes look, Osmond used 2 black eye liners – an ultradark kohl pencil and a MAC Fluidline gel eye liner in Blacktrack as shadows. Osmond then blended them together over the entire lid.

Next, she applied a bit of gray eye shadow in the inner corners and mattified the lid with MAC’s Greasepaint Stick. If you’re confused with the makeup’s name, Osmond assures that "It’s not what it sounds like; it’s actually very, very matte."

You may be wondering why the need for 4 different products and several layers just to create those intensely dark eyes. "Matte makeup is difficult to work with-it sticks and it stays there. A base underneath is necessary in order to create movement" Osmond explains. She then applies a liberal amount of black mascara to finish the three-dimensional, black, rock ‘n’ roll eyes.
